Ian Williams

Ian Williams paints on fat board tablets or deep stretchered canvases and uses a technique of applying multiple thin layers of colour and then sanding back to give a smooth, polychromatic surface, which forms the base layer of the painting. He also produces etchings, aquatints and collagraphs. The main subject of his work is the modern rural landscape, often based upon the mountains, fields and coastlines of North Wales, exploring the motifs, features and repetitive patterns that draw our attention. The style tends towards ambiguity and relative abstraction. A particular obsession is the slate fences typical of parts of Gwynedd and Denbighshire, with many linear paintings and prints being based on their form.

Artist's Statement

'The subject of my work tends to be the modern rural landscape and coastline. I might use an element or certain configuration as a starting point for a painting or print. Rather than being preconceived, the work evolves. Layers of paint build up and I scratch into or sand them back as, gradually, the painting takes shape. The form is what is most important to me, content is secondary. It is the colours, the edges, the marks and the sensations they evoke that enthuse me. Interpretation and meaning are always subjective; if you see a symbolism in my work, it is your symbolism rather than mine. A painting is an object for contemplation, a trigger to stimulate the mind. Something obscured or partially hidden is more intriguing than something that is wholly obvious'
