Andy Short

"My work deals, in a playful way, with human visual perception; what we see is not always reliably accurate. An illusory painting can be a convincing representation of an object or person, yet our perception can be confused as to what we think we are looking at!

My paintings play with unusual juxtapositions of illusory sharp focus, seemingly 'cut-out' objects that float above a blurred background creating a provocative image that confuse the illusory scene. The painting then becomes a curiosity that causes an individual philosophical debate over its meaning. This is encouraged by the ambiguous titles!

Though a debate over the paintings meaning is encouraged, this does not mean there is no deliberate correlation between the image, title and concept - there is. The encouragement to philosophies over the meaning comes from the ambiguity creating a line of thought that can be taken in different directions, thus the debate becomes part of the work"
