Phil Parry

Born in Ebbw Vale in 1952, Phil Parry studied fine art at Newport and Cardiff Colleges of Art from 1972 – 1977. Since then he has exhibited widely in Wales and England and has shown at the National Eisteddfod, The National Portrait Gallery, London, The Mall Galleries London and the National Museum of Wales. His work is held in private and public collections in the UK.

Beaches and the play of light on water have been recurring themes in Phil's work since the mid 70’s In 1992 he undertook a commission to paint coastal scenes around Broadhaven and through that series of paintings realised a fascination with the changing colour and light on the coast of South and West Wales.

''In these new works the title ‘Horizons’ refers to my interest in the horizontal divisions of the picture surface. I often use the portrait format to emphasise the sense of perspective and space by moving the horizon line higher or lower.

The locations which have inspired me the most are in Pembrokeshire, the Gower and Brittany though any topographical reference is often quite incidental. I am more concerned with the constantly changing colour and sense of light and space, scale and time. I seek out the quiet poetic moment when all the elements come together to create a particular mood or atmosphere. The most rewarding times are often early morning and at dusk when there is a storm brewing in the atmosphere.''
