James Donovan

James Donovan was born in Aberdare, South Wales in 1974 and educated at Swansea Institute, graduating in 1997 with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Visual Arts.

The comical, communal and spiritual play their part in James' work and have their basis in childhood memories and conversations with the father figures in his life. These stories, as many tend to do, have been reinterpreted and reformed to present fresh narratives. James' use of symbolism contains stoic, respectful and personal metaphors that have helped to serve up myth and legend for future generations.

James was the recipient of the Sir Leslie Joseph Young Artist of the Year in 1998. His paintings have been exhibited widely across Wales and in the rest of the UK during a career that began when he was still a degree student.
