Howard has been making sculpture in earnest since 1977. She studied at Winchester Art School.
Sophie lives in Bristol with her family, and produces her own cast stone, bronze resin and ceramic pieces as well as commissions for private customers and garden companies. She also makes sculpture from driftwood and willow.
"It always feels as if the next piece will be really good, the excitement of playing with the forms never goes away. "
Some of Sophie's ceramic figures are one offs, but most are produced by making an original, then building a plaster mould around it. The original form can then be reproduced by pressing clay into the mould. The cast, when dry, is fired at the studio of Rupert Blamire of RB Ceramics, an artist and collaborator, also based in Bristol.
The fired terracotta is then smoked over a sawdust fire, waxed and then polished to give it a rich finish.
